Energimærke: Denmark's Energy Label Scale and When It's Mandatory

An energy class isn't a formality — it drives heating costs and legal obligations at sale or rental. Here's the scale, validity period, and exemptions.
Questa guida descrive le regole e la prassi in Danimarca.
This guide is only available in English.
The energimærke is Denmark's mandatory building energy label — its EPC equivalent. It signals more than "how green" a home is: it also creates seller/landlord obligations.
The class scale
From A2020 (most efficient, newest/strictest requirements) through A2015, A2010, B, C, D, E, F to G (least efficient) — 9 tiers in total (sparenergi.dk).
Validity period
The label is valid for 10 years, but is voided early if the building undergoes a material change affecting energy consumption (for example, a change of heating source).
When the label is mandatory
At sale.
When renting out for longer than 4 weeks.
For new construction, before the occupancy permit.
The seller, landlord, or developer pays for it.
Who's exempt
Detached buildings under 60 m², summer houses (sommerhuse), and listed/protected buildings (fredede bygninger).
What it means in practice
The energy class is a guide for estimating future utility costs, not a guarantee: actual consumption depends on occupant behaviour and the condition of the equipment at the time of purchase, not just the class on paper.
